Bormio🇮🇹 - Ski Mountaineering Olympic tickets

We opened the shutters this morning to thick wafting snow.  The biggest softest flakes falling to make this an even more special day! 

Today was the inaugural Olympic event - Ski Mountaineering.  What an exciting sprint event to watch.

The athletes race uphill on skis and then through a zig zag maze, ski uphill some more, then remove skis and carry them on their back whilst running up a huge flight of stairs, then skis back on and up to the top of the hill, then down hill over jumps and through a winding speed downhill course. 

The women achieved this gruelling course in 3 ½ mins.  Round 1 had 3 heats of both men and women and our Aussies did well.  We were decked out in our Aussie flags and seated with Aussie Phil’s family and got to share in their excitement when he made it through to the Semis. 
The vibe was fun and pumping and to top it off the thick snow kept falling. 
An absolutely exhilarating sport and atmosphere! We got to watch round 1, semi finals and the final all in one exciting session!  We loved it 🎉

We came to the realisation with the increasing weather conditions that our aim to watch an Olympic event in nearby Livigno tomorrow and then drive 4.5hrs to where we need to catch a bus just wasn't feasible as the trip was now 6+hrs due to snow and chains required.  So we gave our tickets to Aussie Phil's family and they were delighted as they had a down day planned.

So then we decided to catch the bus to Livigno this arvo instead and the 1hr trip took 1hr 40 mins but dropped us at the beautiful valley filled with ski lodges and the snowboard bowl and aerials and so bonus was we got to see the venue  after all.  A German dinner with Olympic views and a wander around town which is so much fun with all nationalities proudly wearing their colours, and lots and lots of snow!  We watched Indra Bright from the village! 

What an brilliant end to this Winter Olympic dream 🎉

My Italian adventure continues.  Only 1hr 15 mins by train through vineyards with houses dotted on the surrounding hills and I arrived at Venice station on the mainland.  A short walk to my funky hostel to drop off my backpack and then back to the station to catch the train 2 stops to Venice (the Island part).  Travelling over the long bridge that connects the two brought back the emotion from September when I cycled across the bridge after riding Munich to Venice over the Alps.  Amazing to be back again so soon. Day 4: Milano Cortina winter Olympics volunteering

Today dawned a very crisp and clear morning and so an absolute delight walking to the bus as the sun was rising over the mountains all around me 🥰 Arriving on shift means a walk up the steep mountain and so the -6 degrees (feels like -10) is forgotten as the steep walk raises a sweat 😂 We headed up to the start of the Monobob and the crowd was on fire today. The music pumping and all the volunteers dancing to keep warm in the breeze high up the mountain. I was stationed at the start post which was very exciting to watch the speed the women picked up while pushing their 163kg sleds.  Narelle had a ticket to the event today and she started in the finish grandstand initially before walking the mountain to the start line where I was stationed. She had a chance to see the intensity of the event. I then spent some time mid track with some photographers and a bird's eye view of the monobobs...

Day 3: Milano Cortina winter Olympics volunteering

Today was a new day weather-wise, we woke to a light sprinkling of snow and fog on the mountains. Narelle prepared a yummy breakfast and off we went to catch the bus to Cortina. I had purchased tickets to Curling 12 months ago and we had such a good time immersing in this ‘new to us’ sport. Being in the stands you get to watch multiple games being played at once and so always something to see. We think we worked out the aims of the game. Lots of strategy, defense and offensive moves. Then I snuck Narelle over to watch a few mins of the Bobsled practice runs. .they whizz past at great speed. Then up the hill to the town of Cortina. We managed to secure a table at a little bakery cafe for some lunch with mountain views. Then a wander through the heart of town, bustling with skiers off the snow bus, Olympic fans and teams in team colours, women with fur coats, volunteers, stylishly dressed tourists and locals.. a fun mix. ...
